As Minneapolis expanded south from the lakes area, housing construction boomed through the 1920s. A commercial district began forming just east of the Lakes Area centered along the Hennepin Avenue corridor. Uptown was born!
Uptown is a mix of various cultural strains and is considered an area for young people to live and shop. For the last few decades, it was known as a vibrant center for artists and musicians, hipsters, hippies, and a welcoming community for LGBT individuals. Today, it’s a popular destination place for vacationers and young professionals who frequent the many restaurants, clubs and bars after a day at Lake Calhoun or an afternoon of shopping at the ever growing department stores located near the central intersection of Lagoon/Lake and Hennepin Avenue.
