Hygge

Hygge (pron. 'hoo-guh') is a Danish word that loosely translates to "being comfortable; cozy."

Hygge-5_SM.jpg

In an article by The New Yorker, 2017 has been proclaimed as the 'The Year of Hygge.' While the Danes embrace hygge year-round, winter seems like the perfect time of year to bring this warm, welcoming way of life into our homes.  So, get out your favorite sweater, enjoy some warm tea, and snuggle up under a comfy blanket and show us how you hygge, by sending us a photo to share. From our friend, nationally-acclaimed interior designer, Andrew Flesher

I met Andrew Flesher in the late '90s, when we were both young kids, starting our careers. Andrew was one of my first clients when he purchased his loft in the Mill District. Since then, his career has skyrocketed based on his incredible talent and natural gift for interior design. We are happy to recommend him to whomever needs advice on high design.  – Cynthia Froid

Andrew Flesher Interiors has offices in New York and Minneapolis, working on full-service, custom residential, commercial and hospitality projects worldwide.

Minneapolis Loft
This loft in an old mill located on the banks of the Mississippi river in Minneapolis, featured 13' ceilings and an 80' long space when Andrew Flesher took possession of the property. Windows ran the length of the space with only the bathrooms being enclosed. Andrew decided to keep the background white on white on white - floors, walls, ceilings and cabinetry, with furniture selected to add detail and contrast, and to add enclosure in the cavernous space. A foyer was created by adding a partition, with bookcases on one side and a TV on the other (hidden behind an abstract painting). Four large crystal Venetian chandeliers punctuate the foyer, living/dining area, and master bedroom. Artwork hung throughout the loft adds color.

Before + After: Riverfront Loft

CFG Marketing

This historic riverfront loft redesign was a thoughtful collaboration between the homeowners, contractor (Joe Janetka), architect (Rehn Hessell of Yunker Associates) and interior designer (Judy Cornelius).

Judy Cornelius reflected on the design process:

"The clients were clear about the objectives and allowed us to start with a clean slate. The new owners wanted a comfortable and intimate living space with the ability to easily entertain large groups.

Almost everything was updated. Walls were moved, materials were updated, spaces were rethought, and creative storage solutions maximized livability. The floor plan was changed, and new stairs allow easy access to the private roof top deck.

With an expansive riverfront view second to none, the interior design palate reflects the important connection to the Mississippi River.

The end result of this collaboration is a very sophisticated, peaceful environment for the happy new owners.

Before + After: Bridgewater Lofts

CFG Marketing

From a great start, this loft redesign built on a solid foundation and added in customization galore to reflect the new owner's artistic style in a thoughtful and budget-minded way.

With the help of professional interior designer Lynn Barnhouse, our client transformed her space into something just perfect to showcase her collections. From Lynn's website: "Overlooking the Mississippi River, a residence for discerning clients whose previous home Lynn Barnhouse had also designed, some years earlier. Moving into larger quarters with a fine collection of art and ethnic artifacts, they wanted to keep most of the furniture and accessories Lynn had helped them choose for their former home, but to be able to display their collection of objects in a more dramatic and meaningful way. Keeping to a modest budget and minimizing disruption from construction of the new space, Barnhouse has created a fulfilling setting for clients who appreciate the process of design and have a discriminating eye for interesting and beautiful things."
